Peter Brock’s own story is now a book

A new book on Peter Brock to be released next week claims to be distinct from other books on the champion racing driver because it was essentially approved by Peter himself before he died.

Simply titled BROCKY, the book is described as Peter’s own story of his remarkable career.

It was mostly written before his tragic death three years ago, and was checked and corrected by the man himself so that it would be the story of his racing career – as he wanted it told.

Written by a long-time friend and collaborator, award-winning motoring journalist David Hassall, the book is sub-titled ‘Peter’s Own Story: A Life in Top Gear’.

BROCKY covers his turbulent relationship with Holden, the infamous Polarizer and recalls all the great races that made the Brock legend, taking the reader behind the scenes of an intriguing and often controversial sport.

“When Peter tragically died in 2006, the outpouring of grief from all around Australia underscored how this charismatic hero had touched the nation like few other sporting champions,” said Mr Hassall.

“For those who knew him, it was a personal loss, but for millions of other Australians it was also like the loss of a friend because that was the type of man he was, always giving of his time and touching anyone he met.

“Much of the book was written at the height of his powers in 1983 and then after he retired from racing in 1997, with extra chapters covering the rest of his life, so pulling it all together was a trip down memory lane and done with real love for an old friend.

“I simply hope that his legion of fans enjoy reading BROCKY as much as I enjoyed putting it together.”

David Hassall
